HMTV Canada: Hi Exciter How did your recent shows go at the
Sweden Rock Cruise Event and at the Heavy Metal Maniacs Festival in Europe did
you receive a great turn out of fans attending and what other bands were
featured on these past shows that Exciter shared the stage with?
Exciter: Absolutely fantastic... we had an amazing time and
I can't believe we shared the stage with acts like Tiger of Pang Tang, UDO and
Crash Diet! The Cruise was a first for me... and sobering! LOL! They actually
had a Vegas like show the day before which I got to witness... very
interesting. HMM was sold out for the first time in its existence and I'd like
to think we were responsible but I know that the real heroes of the day were
the crews for each festival... these guys work their asses off!!! And that they
can maintain such high spirits in the face of technical and artistic
difficulties is amazing... I was sure going to get thrown over the side for
asking for more liquor on the boat!
HMTV Canada: Has the band completed a Canada or USA tour
this year?
Exciter: No, unfortunately not. We were hoping to hit the
states but a couple of offers we had been postponed. I'm keeping my fingers
crossed though.
HMTV Canada: What is it the music scene like in Ottawa is
there lots of clubs to play at and has the band played locally in Ontario?
Exciter: Actually, as far as I know, there are not. One
thing the guys have been telling since I joined the band is that Ottawa is
barren when it comes to Metal. It's disappointing that we haven't found a good
opportunity to play the band's hometown. Hope is not dead though.
HMTV Canada: So, does the band find that the metal scene is
really becoming a hot spot currently in Southern Ontario?
Exciter: Whoa! When? Where? Do you know someone??? Let us
know!
HMTV Canada: Curious with Exciters long history what tour or
event stands that comes to mind as being the wildest crazy and funny live
performance?
Exciter: I got to tell ya... they've all been full of firsts
over the last 3 years! But the one that stands out in my mind is Athens... the
fans are beyond insane!!! I have never seen a wilder crowd since the
Headbanger's Ball Tour back in '88. And it was only 300 people! They actually
had a railing made of welded 4" and 2" (inch) pipe in front in order
to keep the crowd back from a stage that was only 20' by 12' (feet)... and it
barely worked!! Even with 2 security guards to stop the stage divers, I ended up
having to help!!! Crazy Motherf**kers!!!
HMTV Canada: And speaking of Exciters impressive history
this brings me to my next question has the band or will the band be putting a
DVD together covering the history of Exciter from the early days up to now,
that includes behind the scenes footage of past concerts, interviews, biography
or perhaps some unpublished songs that s never made it to any of your Albums?
Exciter: Would you like fries with that? As a matter of
fact, we are filming a documentary about the recent history of the band... we
are hoping to make something special for the fans. I can't say anymore, gag
order.
HMTV Canada: What has been some of the challenges Exciter
has faced in their 31-year music career history?
Exciter: Let me count the ways... Exciter has been tested
Musically, Artistically, Legally, Logistically, Perpetually. Lack of competent
management has made it difficult for the band to identify and pursue worthy
opportunities. We are musicians in panic... but with a positive outlook to the
future. We are all veterans in this band and we all believe that Exciter has
not reached its apex. I don't care what anyone says... anyone who criticizes
this band can swallow my children... we are here to stay and that's that.
Unless John decides to retire (Ensure John?) I don't think we will be resting
anytime soon.
HMTV Canada: Can you tell us about your recent release
Thrash Speed Burn such as any guest appearances; how long did it take to record
this Album and who helped with the mixing and mastering?
Exciter: TSB is 100% Exciter, no chemicals, no
preservatives. It took about 9 weeks altogether. With me living in Brooklyn and
the guys in Ottawa, it was a bit of a challenge to get together and hammer
things out quickly. We're not about fancy studio tricks or overthinking the
music. We just wanted an old school, vinyl feel to the album and I think we
managed to achieve it. It was produced and engineered by us and a magical being
by the name of Charles Fairfield at nCoDE studios in Ottawa... it's real funny
because we happened to be walking out of rehearsal talking about where we
should record the album when suddenly, a puff of smoke (very similar to those
Ninja Puffs) revealed the presence of Charles and he said: "Behold
Brethren Of Metal!!! Did I hear you guys were looking to do some recording?"
And we (awestruck as we were) replied: "Yeah... magical dude." And he
said: "Here's my Card". Then he whisked us away to a fairytale land
of sound and recording where he honed our ideas and the rest is history.
HMTV Canada: How many fans say they love the old school
metal sounds in Thrash Speed Burn?
Exciter: Well, I didn't count them all but last I heard...
all of them. Pretty neat. huh? some ppl even said that we were the neatest
thing since condoms. F**kin' eh! Since Condoms!
HMTV Canada: What inspires or motivates the band to write
lyrics about demons, war, religion and the apocalypse or end times and who
writes most of Exciter’s songs?
Exciter: Well, basically it's like this... 'Skricci",
that's John to some of you, comes up with a really wicked idea... and the rest
of us fuck it up. But I tell you, you have to be a little off to be in a Metal
band... it's not all about "E man, E!" It's also about gelling with
your bandmates; this allows us to write the songs you hear... I don't know what
inspires the other guys but for me... I hate organized religion and
sanctimonious defecation... that and the fact that I have Sadistic Personality
Disorder.
HMTV Canada: Will Exciter be producing any music videos from
their song tracks off of Thrash Speed Burn?
Exciter: We are unsure at this time. For me, I am a fat
fuckin cow... working on it though... I want to look purty for my close up...
so for this next album I hope we will.
HMTV Canada: Has any of Exciter’s music ever appeared on
movie sound track compilation CDs?
Exciter: Oh! This is cool... we have approached about being
included in the game Rock Band... is that cool or what??? Can you imagine some
little old lady in the middle of suburbia playing our song with her grandkid??
I can't wait!
HMTV Canada: What are Exciters plans for the New Year will
the band be touring or are they working on new material to come out with
another Album soon?
Exciter: We are presently in the writing and arrangement
stage of the new album. We expect to be in the studio by the beginning of the
new year and done by February for a release in March. We have a tentative offer
for several consecutive European dates in April and a host of offers from a
variety of festivals. Nothing set in stone yet, but we'll be announcing
anything concrete by beginning of February. Stay tuned!!!
HMTV Canada: What is Exciters advice for new bands starting
out in the music scene today?
Exciter: Love what you do and if you don't, do something
else. Tenacity and belief is the key.
HMTV Canada: The old saying years ago was that in order for
any Canada Artists to become known in Canada they had to get noticed in the USA
do you think that there is some truth in that old sayings or does the band
think that with the internet things have changed for the better?
Exciter: I'll say this... in the past that might have been
so... but today, if you learn how to wield the internet to your advantage, then
you are in control of your band’s future... but remember, without the fans
there is NOTHING.
HMTV Canda: Before we wrap up our interview does the band
have anything to say to their fans, friends or anything they like to plug in?
Exciter: I am plugging my hair dryer and I'd like to thank
everyone involved in our career over the course of these past couple of
years... Willy Forrest for his support and promoters for Rock Hard, Sweden Rock
Cruise, HMM, Play It Loud and Jens our agent, you are a badass!!! To Sergey,
our biggest fan, thanks for believing. To all our fans we love you and thank
you from the bottom of that blood pumping chasm within our torsos. And remember...
go to these sites to find out any of the latest news on the band, side projects
(Tachyon Christ, Chaos Rodeo, Human Vortex, Satans P*nis, Metal Mouth and
Savage Brat), merch and tour dates... we'll see you on the road!!!
Thank you, Exciter, for taking the time to complete this
interview. I would also like to thank, Willy Forrest, for introducing Exciter
to our eZine. Horns High You Rock HMTV Canada.
Exciter: Thank you Tina, Cheers!
